At the beginning of a game, Players are given a choice between being either a hero or a villain. Once a player chooses a side, the option of choosing one of DC’s recognizable comic book characters as a mentor is given. The options for a mentor include familiar icons such as superman and batman for players who choose to be a hero and antagonists such as the Joker and Lex Luthor for those who choose to be villains.

The combat system is intuitive and easy to learn. There are a variety of melee and ranged attacks that can be carefully controlled through combinations. The attacks are very responsive and allow a player the ability to creatively construct combos to juggle their opponents into submission.

The in game leveling system is very straight forward, consisting of solo and group challenges that earn experience for the character. Each of the levels award points, which can be invested in particular skill sets and powers. Throughout the game, these points allow the player to build their character’s overall performance.

Once the max level of 30 is reached, there is still a vast range of end game content to be explored in the form of PvP matches, co-operative challenges and re-playable content with ramped up difficulty. An array of post game content combined with consistent and diligent patches and updates makes DC Universe Online a game that will last well into the future.

Pull into the harbor to speak with merchants about new items, talk to the Governor about
upgrades, and even participate in the micro-economy in the Auction House. The combat
consists of using spells, items, upgrades, and beefed up stats to defeat your enemies, the same
wine and dine features you’ve gotten so used to over the years.

The mission structure isn’t too varied, and consists mainly of go here, fight this, bring back X
amount of these and so forth. I will admit that Pirate Storm has an extreme amount of content for
the actual gameplay we’re presented with, and that is definitely its strongest suit. I enjoyed the
scenery and setting, although the environments did get a little overused and outdated by the
25th or 30th zone that I saw them in.

The PvP system is extensive, and leaderboard are accurately tracked and kept on a per season
basis in order to keep people competing and coming back for more. You can also take one
ship up to level 35, and customize its abilities extensively to fit anyone’s playstyle. Again it’s
unfortunate that these types of titles have to rely on the model they do in order to generate
revenue and more content, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s all bad the whole way
through.

The community of Pirate Storm is bustling and filled with active players who come in every night to enjoy the seas and their many treasures, and you can’t go wrong with any MMO that lets you earn the
bonuses that others would only provide as a purchase.

It takes a lot of its influence from games like Farmville, and there’s really no other way to say it;
but it pays its respects to those titles poorly. The content is shallow, and the community is rather
thin. I can’t imagine there are too many other people out there clamoring to pay to play on such
an ill-conceived venture as this, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any entirely.

Rising Cities tries its best to incorporate a multiplayer sensibility into a formula which never
needed it, and some would agree actually serves to hurt the progression system as it doesn’t
take the others into account when deciding when or where your borders will expand. I’m not
asking for a Civilization V level sim, because there are already plenty of those flooding the web,
but it wouldn’t hurt to maybe try something a little different than the same thing that’s already
been done a hundred times before.

What’s worse, is the game is jam packed with absolutely useless items that only serve to make
your city “prettier”, which basically speaks to the type of player that this community is attempting
to attract. In the end, you are the only one equipped with all the tools necessary to create a
successful city, but its health, well being, and eventual future is up to you!

Much like several other countries in Asia, Taiwan is incredibly loose when it comes to persecuting copyright infringement or those who support it, so many developers in the region will take advantage by ripping off other games or franchises pixel for pixel and then distributing them under their own network of standard “pay-to-win” schemes. Because they cost next to nothing to get running and available for download, all it really takes is a small base of rabidly obsessed fans to reach profitability and call it a day.

If you’ve played World of Warcraft you know how to play Runes of Magic, as the two are basically identical on the surface and share gameplay mechanics not only with each other, but with the same generic MMO model that’s been decaying for just a little too long now. Runes of Magic is of course a much buggier, less reliable, and overall more hollow experience than WoW ever was, but most of that can be attributed to the way their revenue model drives the content creation process as opposed to how Blizzard did things while they were still undisputed.

All the standard features are included though, and at least it does what it’s supposed to without costing anything up front or once per month. Pets, crafting, PvP, and raiding perform their duties well enough, so at the very least I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to play WoW but isn’t willing to shell out the cover charge at the door.

PlanetSide, a MMOFPS series from Sony Online Entertainment, is a game which attempts to take that premise and crank everything up to 11. Much like the BF franchise upon its original release, PS1 made waves in the community by upping the amount of people that could exist on a server at any given time, and maximizing the mayhem through a progressive levelling system which was still unheard of in shooters of the time. PlanetSide 2 borrows many familiar mechanics from its predecessor, including a wide range of guns and special abilities to choose from, along with the standard “capture/defend” point-to-point assault mechanic that encourages squads to coordinate when heading out to infiltrate enemy territory or digging in defending their own.

There aren’t any PvE components to liven up the beautiful landscape that PlanetSide 2 offers players each time they log in. But the sheer amount of people on each server means that there is always a point that needs assaulting or a stronghold in dire need of defense. No other title on the market today has accomplished what Sony has with this game. Especially when you consider that the whole thing is running on the back of the free-to-play model.
